About the piece

I Want To Go Home is a Traditional Spiritual originating from South Carolina, Georgia, and the Sea Islands. Spirituals were passed down orally and crafted by communities over generations. As part of that tradition, this setting allows the choral community, and individual voices within the choir, to make it their own. The arrangement uses a heterophonic texture, wherein two or more voices independently vary a single line. The solo initiates the call, while the "response" should be improvised by the choir. Keep the improvisations simple and sparse, yet present. In the fourth verse, the soloist can choose the upper or lower line, with the other part covered by a choir member. In the last two measures, the choir can be silent or improvise collectively for closure.

Text:

There’s no rain to wet you

Oh yes, I want to go home, want to go home.

There’s no sun to burn you.

There’s no hard trials.

There’s no whips a-crackin’.

There’s no stormy weather.
