Words from Psalm 93
Music by TEENA LYLE (1963 - )

About the piece

Expectans Expectavi Dominum was written in Spring 2023 as one of two commissions by Leeds Cathedral Choir. It was requested that I make the piece as flexible as possible, so it is available in versions for both unison upper voices and organ, and for SATB and organ. I hope the interchangeable formats allow for a wide range of possible performances. The soprano part takes the main melody throughout but there are intermittent organ and ATB interludes to accommodate younger singers in terms of stamina and range.

Teena Lyle, January 2025

Difficulty : Easy
Voicing : SATB
Accompaniment : Organ
Duration : < 3 minutes
Genre : Sacred
Catalogue Number : V8P1421

An approachable and adaptable work which sets both the Latin and English versions of the text. The soprano line is written with younger voices in mind, and the lyrical choral parts are well supported by the organ.

Text

Expectans expectavi Dominum, et intendit mihi
Et exaudivit preces meas et eduxit me de lacu miseriae,
Et statuit petram dos meus et dirait gressus meos,
Et immisit in os meum canticum novum
Carmen Deo nostro
Videbunt multi et timebunt et speribunt in Domino.
I waited patiently for the Lord,
He stooped down to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the desolate pit and out of the miry clay.
He set my feet upon the rock and made my footsteps firm.
He put a new song in my mouth.
Praise to our God.
Many will see and fear and trust in the Lord.
