VOCES8 is passionate about music education. Our commitment to inspiring people through music includes our unique educational programmes, choral scholarships, summer school and London music education hub. We are part of the VCM Foundation, a registered charity that has received praise from UNESCO and invested more than £1 million in music education in the UK alone.

The VOCES8 Method

Written by Paul Smith of VOCES8 and available in English, German and French with Japanese and Chinese versions planned for release, this ground breaking Method is a unique teaching tool. Designed for students of all ages, the Method is an innovative and engaging programme which is proven to enhance development in numeracy, literacy and linguistics.

Gresham Centre at St Anne & St Agnes

As one of the only vocal ensembles in the world to have started our own centre for vocal music, outreach and education, we are delighted to call the Gresham Centre our London home. We run workshops, masterclasses, concerts and recording sessions from this stunning Wren Church and would be delighted to welcome your school, choir or community ensemble.

VOCES8 Scholars

The ensemble is delighted to have established the VOCES8 Scholars.

First set-up in 2015, the scheme consists of 8 choral scholarships available to young singers looking to gain valuable experience and contacts within the industry at the start of their careers. It provides a unique perspective and training across various different skills, including performing, recording and workshop leading all led by the members of VOCES8.

As part of their artistic development as performers, they receive coaching for VOCES8 Scholar's concerts as well as receiving solo masterclasses from members of VOCES8. They also gain experience of recording by producing a Scholar's CD, with the process being led by the Artistic Director of VOCES8, Barney Smith.

As well as having the opportunity to take part in performances with VOCES8 and associate artists of the ensemble, the Scholars play a very important part in the VOCES8 Summer School. By acting as staff members, they assist the ensemble in coaching amateur singers from around the world and leading singing workshops. We believe that all musicians should not only be great performers but also be equipped to inspire other people through teaching. This is one important feature of the scholarship that forms an integral part of the scheme. The Scholars learn how to lead sessions using the unique teaching tool the VOCES8 Method, led by Paul Smith who designed the model. The Method can be learnt and also taught by people with varying abilities in music education. It allows those who cannot read music to easily pick up rhythms and harmonies, but also simultaneously adopts more complex musical ideas that can cater to more advanced individuals at the same time. It allows access to musical concepts for everyone. This is one of the areas we provide training for our Scholars so they can teach it themselves.

Several of last year's Scholars have performed step-out solos alongside members of VOCES8 at important concerts, including Dido and Aeneas with L'Arpeggiata at Utrecht Early Music Festival, Handel's Dixit Dominus at the VCM Foundation Gala Concert and at both the VOCES8 Summer Schools at Milton Abbey and Ardingly College. The position may also lead to ongoing professional development and paid singing engagements from VOCES8 and the VCM Foundation.

Details of the next round of applications will be released in the New Year. Rehearsals and masterclasses are held at our home of education, the Gresham Centre.

Milton Abbey International Festival and Summer School

VOCES8 is delighted to be the resident ensemble at the Milton Abbey International Festival and Summer School. The summer school is delivered in conjunction with the music festival, with participants working with VOCES8 throughout the week to rehearse and perform the closing concert of the festival. The main focus for the summer school is on major works with orchestra, and in the afternoons there is the opportunity to work in smaller chamber ensembles which are directed by members of VOCES8. Summer school participants can also enjoy free entry to the music festival concerts that take place each evening in the Abbey and showcase renowned international artists.
